Meeting rail

Also called check rail

The rails where the upper and lower sashes meet when the window is closed.

The meeting rails are the bottom rail of the upper sash and the top rail of the lower sash. When the window is closed they line up, one in front of the other, and the sash lock draws them together.

From inside you see only the lower sash’s meeting rail. The upper sash’s meeting rail is directly behind it.
