Top plate
Also called double top plate, cap plate
The doubled horizontal board that caps the tops of the studs.
The top plate is a pair of boards laid flat along the top of the wall. The second board overlaps the first at corners and joints, tying the walls together, and it carries the floor or roof framing above.
