Bottom plate

Also called sole plate, sill plate

The horizontal board along the floor that the studs stand on.

The bottom plate is the single board laid on the floor along the base of the wall. The studs are nailed down into it, and it is fixed to the floor framing below.

It is cut out at a doorway, but runs unbroken under a window.
