Stud
One of the vertical members that make up the body of a framed wall.
Studs are the upright boards in a wall, usually 2x4s or 2x6s spaced 16 inches apart, measured centre to centre. They carry the load from above down to the bottom plate and give the wall finish something to be fixed to.
Around an opening, studs get special names according to what they do: king, jack and cripple.
