Header
Also called lintel
The beam over an opening that carries the load around it.
A header is a beam across the top of an opening. Where a stud has been left out to make the opening, the header takes the weight that stud would have carried and passes it to the jack studs at either end.
The wider the opening, the deeper the header has to be.
