Rough opening
Also called RO
The framed hole in the wall that a window or door is fitted into.
The rough opening is the gap left in the framing, bounded by the jack studs, the header and the rough sill. It is made a little larger than the window unit so that the window can be set level and plumb using shims.
Window makers publish the rough opening size that suits each unit.
