Knob

Also called doorknob, handle

The rotating handle that retracts the latch so the door can open.

Turning the knob draws back the latch, a spring-loaded bolt in the edge of the door, so the door can swing free. Let go and the latch springs out again to hold the door shut.

The latch keeps the door closed but is not secure by itself. For that a door also has a deadbolt.
