Deadbolt

Also called dead bolt

A lock bolt that is turned by a key or thumb-turn and cannot be pushed back.

A deadbolt is a solid bolt that slides into the jamb when the key or thumb-turn is turned. Unlike the spring latch in the knob, it stays where it is put, so it cannot be pushed back with a card.

It is usually fitted above the knob.
