Jamb

Also called side jamb

The vertical side members of the window frame.

The jambs are the two upright sides of the window frame. On a double-hung window the sashes slide up and down in channels along the jambs, and the balances or sash weights that hold a sash open are housed in or behind them.

Used loosely, “jamb” can mean any of the frame members, which is why the top piece is also called the head jamb.
