Panel

A thinner board set into the frame of a door.

A panel fills the opening between stiles and rails. It is thinner than the frame and sits in a groove around its edge, without being glued, so that it can swell and shrink with the seasons without splitting the door.

The number and shape of the panels give a door its style: two, four and six panels are common.
