Muntin

Also called glazing bar, sash bar

A narrow bar that divides a sash into smaller panes.

Muntins are the slender strips that divide a sash into a grid of lites. Originally they were structural: glass could only be made in small pieces, and muntins held the pieces together.

Many modern windows have a single sheet of glass with a grille applied to it or sealed between the panes to imitate muntins.

Muntins are often confused with mullions. A muntin divides the glass within one sash; a mullion separates one window from the next.
