A metal bar slid inside a vinyl chamber to stiffen it.
Vinyl alone bends too easily for long members. A steel or aluminum tube or channel is slid into a chamber to stiffen the member and to give screws for locks and hinges something solid to bite into.
It is used where it is needed, such as meeting rails and the stiles of large sashes, because the metal conducts heat and gives back a little of the insulation the chambers provide.
